MICHAEL A. SATTERWHITE LYNN SCHOOL COMMITTEE MEMBER

Issues

It is tough to envision the goals for the Lynn Public Schools materializing without a team of school committee members that have the background, experience and knowledge of how the school system works and how to deliver the needs of our students and educators.

Growth, which is sometimes slower than we want, must be steady and controlled. I firmly believe we have laid a solid foundation from which to grow upward with our Lynn Public Schools. Lynn Public Schools have some of the most qualified educators, some of the brightest students and a community that is hungry for growth. We must move forward from any initial trepidation our City government has had about our growing student population. We must be ready for expected growth and the expected transitions. We must not leave any student behind and we must provide all necessary tools to our educators. In the book I am currently reading it states “it is better to die trying than die dying”. We should not stay in the same place and do the same thing.

Perspective is everything and oftentimes it’s important to zoom out and then zoom back in. If we want growth and improvement, we must first take a look at where we are and plan on where we want to be.

As a School Committee member, I will focus on these areas:
  • Work to prevent the threat drugs, bullying and violence pose in our schools. Our schools must be a safe place.
  • Grow and improve the Lynn Public Schools' relationship with each family in the community and with the entire city government.
  • Fiscal responsibility is important and we must focus on the use of our tax dollars in our public school system. We need every penny to count and to reduce any waste, without taking away from the learning experience.
  • Community awareness is extremely important and we need our students involved in each community.
OPEN CONCEPT: We need to create a sub-committee dedicated to working with community businesses, PTA/PTOs and student government entities in our high schools. We need to listen to the concerns from the community we serve.

TEAM CONCEPT: Our schools need to be priority for our families, businesses and our government. We need to work together and bring in new ideas and plans to improve the education offered at our schools.

OVERCOMING: It is important to learn from our mistakes from the past, not continue to live in them. We should not be slow to change out of fear, otherwise we will leave certain students in limbo and we should never fail our students.

DELIVERING: We must not fail and we must deliver for all our students, no matter what.

We must nurture the support for our educators and students, whether through families and our communities or through adequately funding our public school system.
